Make square hole in a cylinder

Hi guys,

I'm a newbie in maya and I need to make a square hole in a cylinder. So I made several edge loops to create square face, and I extruded it. To smooth my cylinder, I recreate edge loops but this last operation bend the mesh like in this image when I do the smooth preview:

Any idea to fix it ? Thank you in advance !Smiley Happy

PS : Sorry for my bad english...

Cutting a hole into a cylinder and then going to smooth mesh preview is gonna be very difficult for a new modeler, its very tricky to do that and only with many attempts you gonna get there...my advice is not use smooth mesh when trying to model curved surfaces and then hard corners in the same geometry...instead use higher polygon count for the cylinder and then extrude in your holes or even boolean and then continue modeling ...no subdivision...but...if you you wanna continue this way do a google search on polycount subvision cylinder or something like that and see if you find a similar wireframe images and study it.

Also keep in mind that edge loops near another edge will make the surface appear harder there..so ..edge loops going vertiically on your mesh causes those harder lines when you hit the 3 key...

Hello,

Thank you for your fast help. Effectively, I saw that edge loops interfere with the smooth preview : SmoothPreview.png

This is why I removed edge loops that exeeded of the hole and it result the first image in my first message.

So I will try to work with a hight poly count mesh...

Thank you very much for the picture ! I'll study it...
