Looking for some specific SubD workflow tips

I am working on a project for class and we have to use only a SubD workflow. I have always struggled with issues around holes on curved surfaces and can't find any decent tutorials that explain a proper way to go about this.

the pictures are just an example of what I am dealing with here:

  • I am trying to punch a hole into a curved surface
  • When I use the smooth preview (3 key) The surface looks good but when I use the base mesh (before the hole) as reference I see the edges around the hole standing out from the surface of the base mesh (I don't want this).
  • I can push the verts back to be more inline with the original face but this don't feel very exact and is time consuming and tedious plus I feel that it doesn't give very good results anyway.

I would love some tips or tutorials on a better way to solve this issue if it can actually be solved in a better way.

In the pictures the green mesh is the reference (before hole) mesh and the grey is the mesh I pushed a hole into.

they match perfectly before smooth preview but after, the grey mesh around the hole does not pull in enough to keep the perfect round shape of the ball.

Thanks for any help!
