Locking object?

Hey everyone

I was wondering if there was a way to lock objects in maya so that they cannot be selected... similar to the lock that is used to lock layers in photoshop.

I was also wondering if there was a way to have some objects in maya smooth shaded, and some wireframe-style. This would be for use inside of maya while modelling, not for the final rendered product.

Thanks in advance for your help, I hope you can be of assistance

These can both be done with layers. Create a new layer and assign a mesh object to it. If you set the layer to "Reference" then the objects on it will not be selectable. You can also set it to shaded or unshaded.

Change the "middle box" of the layer to display an "R" to make it a reference layer. Or, right click-hold the layer until the menu pops up, and choose "Set Selected Layers" --> "Reference".

Then right click-hold until the menu pops up and choose "Set Selected Layers" --> "Unshaded".
