Image Planes Problem

Hi - I am brand new to Maya and an old blender user.

I am following a tutorial but I have having problems with "Image Planes" - orthographic references for modeling.

I'm in Maya 2016

There are two problems actually:

1. I can't select the planes through the viewport. not by clicking or dragging a box selection. I can only select through the outliner.

2. The tutorial said I should limit the visibility of the plane to only the specific view of it. Only - I can't do. Whenever I try to change "side" to "front" it snapped back to "side" and won't let me do it.

Use the corresponding viewport with the same view of the image plain.

If the image plain is an image of the side of your object...use the side viewing viewport....

Did the tutorial tell you to create the image plane on its own display layer? If so, make sure the "R" flag is not on. If it is, that will prevent you from selecting the image plane in the viewports.
