You are correct.  Add that line so that you can apply a bevel to it.

  this looks ok? I add a edge there and bevel the edge for the sharp edge

Once you've put the diagonal edges in your mesh, you should delete the edges surrounding it to get back to quads.  Then a bevel will give you control over how sharp/soft you want the corner.
