How to make a blendspace without a skeleton?

I'm a Maya user of middling experience doing a test run of a 3D set of pliers for my job. They'd like the model to be able to open and close, which is simple enough to animate, but I thought it might make my life a little easier if I had something like a blendspace to just slide the position of the lower jaw up and down and rotate it. But I've only ever messed with blendspaces for facial rigs. Is it possible to make a blendspace or something similar without a rig? Images for clarity.
