How to get pngs to display only unmasked portions of an image in Maya:

Hello,

I am working on a camera projection asset of a Gazebo.

I masked out the parts of the image I didn't want in Photoshop, so only the Gazebo remained. When I import the photo as a projection texture in Maya, the masked portions of the original image still show up (in the image below, the white areas around the object.

The image files are in png. And I generated an alpha channel in Photoshop, but it still seems to be showing up in Maya.

I have also included the maya scene as well.

Any help would be super appreciated. Thanks!

Hi!

Check your material network. There is no transparency on your material.

Also don't confuse alpha with transparency.

Hi Mspeer, thanks for looking!

I am probably misunderstanding what you are saying, but I attempted to add transparency via the adjuster in the attribute editor, but it makes the texture of the gazebo transparent as well. I just want the white bits (which I masked out already in Photoshop) to be removed.

Hi!

It sounds you are not familiar with the node networks in Maya.

Please use Node Editor or Hypergraph to make the necessary connections. I will not explain this in detail here, but look at the network, there is only a color connection from projection to material "lambert1" (no transparency, no alpha).

Node networks are an essential part of Maya, there is a lot info about this in the Maya Online Help / Documentation, this forum and other parts of the web.

Hello,

Thanks again. Coming from Blender, I am familiar with node networks. I did some reading up a couple nights ago on the node networks for Maya too.

I connected transparency and alpha to my material and its still showing the masked out areas of the object (which were masked out in PS). Something might be wrong possibly with the image in .psd, so I'll have to check that again.

Hi!

Please upload the new scene-file and add the texture-file.

Hello again,

Thanks for your help. I have added the scene file and texture files.

The texture I tried to connect transparency on is "Lambert1" for the object "BottomAndTop".

Thanks.

Hi!

1. Don't use default material lambert1 for anything, replace it with a new material

2. The texture is PillarAsset2, but needed PillarAsset (but looks like it's the same so it worked).

3. There is no continues connection / transport for Transparency from the file node to the material node
