How to create an edge between two vertices?

Hi guys, new to Maya here using the student edition.

I was wondering if there was a way to bridge two vertices with an edge like this:

X-----------------X

Where the X's are vertices and --- is the edge created.

Or perhaps create an edge from a single vertex to another edge liket this:

X-----|

Where the X is the vertex and | is the other edge.

Thanks in advance!

You can bridge edges only with the bridge tool or you can merge the vertices .

I think the word "bridge" is getting things confused.

What InappropriateName is asking... which is the same thing I want to know... Is how do I choose two vertexes in a polygon, and get Maya to "draw" (show) the edge between them.

Y'know, the sort of thing that is reeeeealy easy on pretty much any other 3D software yet seems to be hidden (like pretty much anything else useful) in Maya

If InappropriateName is wanting to do things Lightwave style where you draw points in mid air and then connect them together to make polygons then you cannot. Maya dont work that way. Verts and edges are children of polygons.

Yep, I'm a Noob to Maya

No I'm not a Noob to 3D (23 years and counting as a professional)

Is this the sort of thing you are after?

http://docs.autodesk.com/MAYAUL/2015/ENU/GettingStarted/#!/url=./files/Modeling_a_polygonal_mesh_Spl...

Other option would seem to be

Component mode - Vertexes

Select the two vertexes you are interested in - use SHIFT to add to your selection (SHIFT? REALY MAYA FOLK? - the rest of the world uses CNTL to add to selections!)

Mesh Tools \ Connect Tool

Whatever you do do not press the little square as it brings up some message or other that doesn't last long enough for you to read, but does leave a little circle around your two verts and doesnt draw in the edge. Also neither the "q" nor "y" nor "esc" key drops the tool and ENTER doesnt do anything either.

You can choose the two vertices and then click "Connect components" - it creates an edge between the vertices you've selected. 🙂

The multi-cut tool in the modeling toolkit panel on the right is also good for adding edges between existing vertices. (or from a vertex to an edge)

Append polygon tool might also be useful if there is not already geometry between the two verts.

23 years and you still don't know that your key is called CTRL and not CNTL...

24 years now and my old arthritic hands and enfeebled brain don't work like what they used to. Doesn't help being labeled "thick" at school cos they hadn't invented dyslexia back then when dinosaurs ruled the earth.

And what sadistic b'stard gave the name Dyslexia to - Kids Who Can't Read Good and Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too - At least Derek Zoolander understands me...

HI,

You can use :-

1. Multicut tool when you want to draw edge between two vertices and you have to cross over few edges.

2. Connect component in simple case when there is no edges between the two vertices.

Is there a way to do this (the multi-cut tool method) using two existing vertices but in python as I am unable to find the code for it. thank you

Hi,

Select the vertices and use Edit Mesh > Connect.
