Hello everyone.

I have been trying to model the Helmet in GSWM but when I am upto the part of extruding.

LINK: http://download.autodesk.com/us/maya/Maya_2014_GettingStarted/files/Modeling_a_polygonal_mesh_Drawin...

When I type the thickness to be 1.5, it's too big for the helmet and I am unsure why it's extruding so far out when it should not be. (will supply screen shots below)

If your scene scale is different than what's being used in the tutorial - the value to use for the extrude will be different.

Set it to a number that looks right rather than worrying about making it the same number in this case...

the odd thing is I just installed Maya 2014 and getting started, I have followed it to the key and it mentioned nothing of changing the scene scale so either I did do something wrong or Maya guide is incorrect How are you able to change the Scene scale to try and match just for future reference

You can change the scene scale in the preferences.

This didn't help me. My settings were already set to centimeters and the thickness still extrude correctly. Could it be something else?

The best advice I can give Is try not to worry too much about being dead on, one thing that helped me is ESTIMATE where you think it needs to go, keep in mind you are able modify the model later.

I have come a long way since posting this and the issue I had to fix, was me not worrying too much at the start of modeling, to follow a guide to the exact measurement.

In the end, exact measurements ain't the best way to do things when you can most of the time, go back and touch up on the things you feel, need it.

That being said, to answer your question.

If you have already created geometry and are trying to fix your grid lines to match up with the lines on the Model, I suggest try scaling the model as well as changing the grid lines.

Hope this helps.
