Delete Selection Sets in Outliner

Hey!

I'm getting all these selection sets in my outliner when I'm modelling. They all have what seem like instances of my geometry in them. When I delete them, it also deletes my geo. I looked online and couldn't find a way to delete them. I tried deleting history and optimizing scene size. Is there a way to delete them? Do they need to be on in the first place? I come from a 3dsMax background so I'm struggling to understand what these sets are for, as it just seems really cluttered.
