Curve Shape With Holes (Topology)

Hi guys,

I want to model a ceiling fan in Maya and I need to do a kind of complex shape (the part that hold the blades). I started with a flat shape, modeled to holes and then I used a bend deformer to make the loop. But, when I turn smooth preview on, I got these "define edges" instead of having a completely smooth shape. How would you guys do this ?

You can't smooth this kind of model without proper topology, I f you need the job done faster use a higher poly mesh and Boolean with a bit of clean up. and use a round edges shader.

I don't really need to have the job done faster, I just wan't to learn how to do the proper topology for this king of shape. I've had this issue many time and I wonder what the topology for this should look like. Maybe there's some "topology rules" that I don't apply. Would love to know them !

Fair enough Anthony, I would recommend going to Polycount.com where you can find posts covering subdivision modeling and topology, also a quick google and you tube search on the topic will set you in the right knowledge path.

There are also wireframes you can study closely to understand the topology solutions when smoothed. Save them in a folder for future reference.

Is just too much to cover here.

Best of luck.

Ok. Thank you very much, I'll check out polycount.com !

Have a nice day !

Just remember this simple rule, edges closer to each other will produce a harder mesh/edge, the thing is to learn when you need them and where.
