Create Polygon Tool

Hello, I am trying to create a character, and I am new at this. I am working on the head, specifically the eye area. I have a good start, but so I can get the Caruncle right, I've made an eyeball out of an NERB and then made it live so I can create geometry around it. I am under the impression that this new geometry should snap to the eyeball when I make it. I am using the front view, and despite that, it is not following the x-axis and it is going the z, even though it seems like it should be followed x, well because it is going across the front camera view. And since I am creating it going left in the front perspective. In the examples below the first is my, as you can see it is moving in the x. I added two from the tut I am doing through Pluralsight, and his did append to the live Nerb sphere, and his stayed in the z axis because it appended. I cannot for the live of me figure out why. He is using a older version of Maya, 2016 I believe.

Figured it out. It is a setting in the tool for create polygons. If you keep new faces Planer one, it will stay in the plane of the Nerb you are appending too. The Class I am taking is 2016, so I suspect that was not there, but I do not know. This is solved, by myself.
