Create a UV map from image applied to a 3D object?

Hello, apologies if this is not the exact place to post this question. I'm relatively new to Maya.

With that said, I have learned how to apply an image to a UV map and see the program apply it to my 3D model, but now I'm trying to get the reverse. Essentially, I'm trying to apply a high-res image to a 3D model (A vehicle) and create a UV map to get a flat, dissected version of that image. This image would then be printed on an industrial sized printer, and applied to the real-life model.

Is Maya capable of this?

Hi @Anonymous

Your question is a bit confusing but it sounds like you're trying to get a UV map from an image on the model?

If so, that's not possible in Maya currently. UV maps are generally created first and then materials are applied to them since you need to know what pieces need the most UV space and many other factors.

Please let me know if this helps or if I misunderstood your question!

Hi Sean,

Thanks for getting that info to me. I would have spent hours in Maya trying to figure it out.
