Connect objects with different number of edges/vertices?

Is there a way to connect two different objects that don't have an equal number of edges/vertices?

I am trying to connect the edges a hole I made in the side of a sphere to a tubular object, but the objects have a different number of edges/vertices.  It would be nice to not have to change the number of sides of the tubular object, is there a way to connect the two objects?

The two objects would have to be combined into one mesh, then select the edges you need and use the bridge tool.

If the edges are not the same number, select only the ones that match in number and then manually close the gap that remains.

Is there really not a better solution to this? In 3DSMax it doesnt keep account the amount of edges and it just collapses vertices where needed.

just select the vertices and use the merge tool with the desired tolerance.
