Append To Polygon

Hi everyone, 

I'm new to maya - I'm modeling for fun and because I'll do an animation school- I'd like to do a unicorn. When I'm using the Append on Polygon tool the edges on a missing face are shining, but when I click to it, nothing happen. My normals are ok, I already check it, my mouse is ok, I don't know what should I do. Please, can someone can help me ?
