Any suggestions on how to add thickness to this

I m following one of the tutorials on DT for modelling in maya and currently I have a shape that is shown in the pic below. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to add thickness to this all around ? It doesn't seem I can use a simple extrude because the geometry flows in several directions and that throws it off. In the tutorial they do a simple border-edge extrude but that just gives an illusion of thickness. Does maya have a thickness tool like MODO where it can just "plump up" the geometry or do I have to do edge extrude, then fill hole and split ?

Ha - it seems that today I m answering my own questions :)...

Maya's extrude on the whole object works fine - my geometry was messed up.

Just minutes after posting this I found that I had some duplicate vertices and edges, probably from some earlier edge loop or extrude actions. I did mesh cleanup and after that I was able to add thickness without problems using basic extrude tool.

Hopefully this helps some other noob who gets into a similar situation
