Annoying namespace/clashing node problem

All I want to do is import an fbx, and if it's using a material already in the scene, keep it. Or if it's assigned to a layer that's already in the scene, go into that layer. How is this so hard for a program to comprehend?
But no matter what fbx import options I choose, it will create a new layer name and a new material name
I have a scene with a bunch of different fruits. They're all assigned into the "fruits_layer". They have fruit_mat as the lambert material. All good so far. In a previous scene I had exported out a single apple as apple.fbx which also was assigned into the fruits_layer and also had the fruit_mat on it.
Now I simply want to import this apple.fbx into the new scene, and for Maya to recognize they share the same material and layer and KEEP them all together. But no matter what import option I choose, I get either apple:fruit_mat as a new material created automatically, or fruit_mat1 (then when I try to import again, fruit_mat2 gets created and so on)
It's the same issue with the layer, instead of putting it into the correct fruit_layer that it was assigned when I exported it out, it now creates either apple_fruit_layer or apple:fruit_layer as new layers above the correct one
Can someone please help me out here? Every time I import fbx objects I have to delete the new automatically created layers and materials and re-apply the correct material and redo the layer. I've tried "use namespace" along with all 3 options. Ive tried resolve clashing nodes with the filename/with this string: (and left blank)
