A sphere and a box-unfolding, applying texture

Hello! I am new to maya and I have a really basic question but don't know how to do it the right way . I need to unfold some objects in order to apply texures on them. The objects are pretty basic-a sphere and a box with applied bevel on it. The method my teacher showed is the following :selecting all of the faces of the object, select mapping-planar mapping and after that selecting some edges for the seam, next pressing shift+x, selecting all of the uvs and unfolding them. However I have trouble figuring out where to place the seam on a sphere and on a box with bevel on it-because of the bevel there are some rounded corners and too many edges. So when I follow my teacher's instructions for some objects he showed it seems really easy but when I try to unfold some really basic objects I just don't know where to start. Thank you in advance!
