Does anyone know of a method or program that you can render models made from Maya LT? I can't really afford Maya proper and used the trial already. I'm trying to get work in the industry but need to create both updated reel's and portfolio pages.

Sorry. Autodesk® Maya LT is a cost-effective content creation solution for indie game developers. So you can't render in it.

Yes, and I'm fully aware of that. I know there isn't an add on or program to render in LT. I'm trying to see if anyone knows a reliable THIRD PARTY software that does rendering in general. Honestly I'd prefer something from Autodesk itself, and I'd even be willing to pay an extra 5-10 a month in order to render. Even if it just gave you access to basic software and Contrast Sensitive render only. I'd perfectly be willing to spend 10 extra for the ability.

I know how you feel ;u;

im looking for the exact same thing! I did hear that you could use playblast to render some things but it's a bit confusing, im on the search for alternate programs too.

You should be able to take your finished asset into any standalone renderer that supports FBX.  e.g. Keyshot is one option (but pricey)!

Marmoset Toolbag 3 can create turntables of your real-time assets and supports FBX animations now I believe as well.

You could also take your assets into a game engine like UE4 or Unity, if you have some experience with those.

Blender/Cycles is an option but I've heard it can have problems importing animated models from Autodesk products.

I've heard good things about Appleseed but have yet to try it myself.

One option might be to get a bunch of scenes ready for your reel in LT, then rent the full software for the shortest possible time (1 month) and output them all at once.  That will probably be comparably priced to many 3rd party renderers.

You can't open Maya LT scenes (.mlt) in Maya.

True, but you can use FBX in both.

True, but if you're okay with using FBX workflow then you would need to compare $185 for one month's usage of Maya to Marmoset's $189 for a perpetual license.  I think Maya is an excellent tool, but does it offer value for money if *all* you want is the ability to render some portfolio shots.

...so you CAN apply textures in Maya LT but can only render in playblast, BUT you can export your mesh as an fbx and render in say Renderman free version? I have been using a student version of maya so of course cant sell what I make. And it tags that mesh as student version made. But if I make it and texture it in LT then export the fbx to my student version to do a nice render will it then tag that mesh as student? That would be easiet for me, model in LT and apply textures in LT then export as fbx into my student version to do a nice render to show it off.

Thx,

Scott

Why is Maya LT's focus only on game dev. when it is used for film, and other fields, as well?  Maya renders are not a good indication of how something will look in a game engine, so I can see the lack of an LT renderer in that situation.  Yet why should Maya users who use it for other 3D fields be forced to the practice of exporting their work in order to render it?  This is a break in some workflows, an unnecessary one.

The ability to tweak material and lighting settings, and preview it via a test render is a cyclical process, sometimes requiring numerous iterations.  So, to be able to do it all in one package (Maya + Renderman for Maya for example) saves time, a little here and there but a lot over time.  It is about establishing a fluid workflow.  This, no doubt, is why companies like Substance have moved from just being another app to alt-tab in and out of to one that extends many of its features and interfaces, via plug-ins or round-tripping, with apps such as Maya and Unreal Editor.  Allegorithmic realized the importance of a fluid workflow, of keeping your mind engaged on getting work done, rather than learning and becoming efficient with the varied UIs of multiple apps.

Wouldn't a lack of rendering in LT force people to seek out competitors' products, such as Blender (hello Renderman!) to finish their work?  At what point do they start to consider just moving the whole pipeline to said products?  Pruning minor features is one thing, but to focus LT on one of many 3D fields where Maya has had a solid foothold seems odd.

well I wasted $305.00. Can I get a refund? Should've figured rendering wasn't included with the LT version. I wanted to show one of my colleagues how easy it was to setup materials and packed grey scale textures and render in Maya. My colleague is using Maya. For me Blender has became my main tool after over 6 years of using 3ds Max and Maya with the price going from $180 up to $200+. So I figured LT version would be an affordable solution to hold for a year. But little did I know rendering is not part of the package. 😄 I would appreciate it if I could get a refund.

If you're trying to get a refund, you'll want to get in contact with Autodesk. But if you've had it more than a week, it's pretty much not going to happen. Tried using Blender, and it's to "wonky" for me to be willing to switch over to. Though I was looking into FBX rendering through it, but 3D Viewer on Windows is a quick and dirty way to just sort of check out assets. Generally gets the job done when I'm just doing some quick checking on the asset in question.
