That does not happen here, Maya 2015 (not LT). You do nothing else to the cube? Can you post a picture of what's happening?

Hi blood_wolf_live,

I am not getting this issue either.

In the image you attached with the Cleanup options, you have 3 other options selected along with Non-planar faces. Why are you under the impression it's non-planar faces that are being selected?

That being said, it's a puzzle to me why anything at all is being selected since you are using a default cube.

Have you tried to reset your preferences?  Also, in the Cleanup Options, in the Fix by Tesselation section, unclick everything except Non-planar faces to verify that it is indeed non-planar faces that are being selected.  Delete the construction history and freeze the transformations on the cube just to eliminate other variables.

Regards,

Carlos

Ok, try the following please.

Create your cube and then enter the following command in the command line:  setPolygonDisplaySettings("nonPlanar");   (you can also accomplish the same thing by going to Display>Polygons>Non-planar Faces)

This command toggles the display of non-planar faces to ON.  I would like to know at what point the faces become non-planar.  My feeling is that this is a display issue, but I can't be sure at the moment.

Moving one vertice will produce non-planar faces, this is normal.  By definition, a non-planar face is a face that has more than three vertices, and one or more of those vertices does not lie in the same plane. (see https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2015/ENU/Maya/fil...

If you select a face on your cube and rotate it, this will also produce non-planar faces.  Scaling a face should not produce any though as far as I know.

Can you tell me the version and build of Maya Lt you are using? Do the following commands to find out:

about -c;

about -iv;

Also, please send me your scene with the cube.  If you can't attach it to this forum, you can send it directly to me at carlos.carpintero@autodesk.com.

I've opened your file and I don't see any non-planar faces. More and more I am thinking there is something going on with your particular system.

I noticed that there is something different in the Maya looks and feels when I open your file.  The way the cube is drawn, along the edges we see black triangles.  If I do Display>Polygons>Face Triangles, we see the dotted lines of the triangles from the rear faces.

The grid is different from the default grid, and if I go to Display>Grid Option box and press Apply, the grid shrinks down to it's original correct size.

Do you change the default Maya setup? Or, do you run any Script Nodes when you open a new scene?

I hate to admit it, but I am stumped.

I've looked through our database of bugs and haven't found anything concerning non-planar faces appearing after scaling a face.

Some other ideas to try:

1. Reset everything to Maya's default, so grid size, or world size, camera settings, etc.

2. Update video drivers

The silver lining with all this I think is that non-planar faces are not necessarily bad. Non-planar faces can be smoothed, rendered and all the modelling tools should still work fine.

Non-manifold geometry is the thing you need to avoid since Maya's modelling tools will give unpredictable results.  You can learn more here: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya-lt/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2015/ENU/MayaL...

If I learn of anything new I'll update this thread.  Or if you find the reason it's happening, please let us know.

Regards,

Carlos

Excellent, I am really happy my suggestion helped you.

If you have time, can you please give the exact steps on how you set up your grid?  There may be a bug there that hasn't been seen before.

If you don't have time, that is ok, I will try and repro your setup.

All the best,

Carlos
