MayaLT for modeling, and Poser for Rendering?

Hi there,

I am just getting into 3D modeling/animation. (coming from 2d illustrations)

I know MayaLT is meant for indie gaming, but I was wondering if I could use it for making a mini series (based off my friend's book he publushed)

The exact question is as follows, I have limited money, so I bought MayaLT for the modeling, but then I found out it cannot render, so that being said:

Is it possible to export my models, and then import them into poser to render them? (at that point I do not know if its worth just keeping them in poser for the rigging and animation, or bringing them back into MayaLT for those parts, assuming that is possible with the LT version, I had problems finding this out.)

Thanks!

So you are trying to create animated sequences?

If so what I would reccommend is to use the Playblast feature to do your "Renders"  this will allow you to set up your materials and textures so you see them in the viewports, then you can use Playblast to either create images larger than your viewport resolution, or create image sequences.  You can get pretty nice results inside the Maya Viewport if you turn on the extra settings for antialiasing, ambient occlusion, shadows.

Hi Remi,

Thanks for the response! I think that is all correct. Forgive me I im only a few days into this, (just finished watching the MayaLT 101 videos) and my termenalogy, and understanding is lacking.

What I am after is creating a 3D animated series, with a story (like TV show etc) so using 3d models with voice actors, sound effects, 3d backgrounds for the scene etc to create a visual story for this book, so if "animated sequences" is that, then yes.

If MayaLT can do all that, then I would sure like to only use that if I can! (and skip poser alltogehter) I understand the full version of Maya exists for a reason, I just am trying to see if price wise, I can get away with using MayaLT for my goals.

The character examples you provided are more than good enough for renderig quality, so if MayaLT can do that using all the settings you mentioned, and playblast then that will work! (Even if MayaLT cant do that good rendering, I am just getting started out here, so if the rendering has to be more crude with the LT version that is fine, I just wanted some level of it).

Thanks!

Hi ringcallern,

Here is a link for you to compare Maya vs Maya LT offerings.  you will find that many of the animation tools are included in the LT version, yet some tools are omitted.  Maya LT vs Maya

Here is a nice clip showing some of animation and rigging capabilities of Maya LT 2015 DT Maya LT anim_rigging

As far as rendering, you don't get access to Mental Ray nor some of the other render engines, yet you do get viewport 2.0 and Shaderfx which will allow you to get pretty nice looking renders.  Yet don't expect Maya Mental ray render quality or Vray.. etc.. Hopefully this was helpful in answering your question.  Best of luck, I can't wait to see what awesome creations you come up with!

Thank you very much for the repsonse! Your help, as well as Remi has helped me figure everything out. Glad I can just use MayaLT for all my needs and NOT need to use Poser 🙂
