FBX to DAE (Collada) Converter (Installing Steps)

Anonymous

Hi, I understand that this may seem like a super easy step, but I am new to adding plug-ins...

And please do not answer with the post where just directs me to the dowload link for the converter! I see the converter and has downloaded it multiple times into both the plug-in folder, the maya folder, and any folder that seems reasonable to put the converter file, but it doesn't show up in my Maya LT 2017! Isn't there just an easy FBX_DAE_export.mll or something?

I am probably putting the converter file in the wrong directory, but I couldn't find any post or explanation on where to put the file...

It would be nice if someone can offer me a step-by-step .FBX to .DAE converter installation procedure. Thank you.

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks for posting 🙂 Would you be able to provide the link to the plugin you want to use? I would be happy to test this on my machine.

This article describes the correct location for the plugin to be put in for Maya LT to be in this folder:

  • On Windows, the default plug-in location is: drive:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya<version>\bin\plug-ins
  • On Mac OS X, the default locations are: /Applications/Autodesk/maya<version>/Maya.app/Contents/MacOS/plug-ins and /Users/Shared/Autodesk/maya/<version>

Lastly, if you have put the plugin in the correct folder, I would recommend checking your Plugin Manager to see if the plugin has loaded into your Maya scene. This is how you get to that window:

MayaLT_pluginManager.jpg

Please let me know if any of the above information resolves the problem 🙂 If not, I would be happy to keep working with you until we get it figured out.

Thank you so much @jordan.giboney

I downloaded the FBX to DAE Converter 2013 on the Autodesk website:

fbx20133_converter_win
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/item?siteID=123112&id=22694909

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I followed the steps, and still no plug-in shown in the Plug-in Manager...

I think the biggest issue might be, from what I am assuming, that this is not a plug-in, but more of a preset or extra settings for the FBX export window? Since the file itself is a preset. However, from one tutorial I saw on Youtube, I am suppose to have an extra tab "Collada" under the UI tab (Export window, image 2) or since I probably have a newer version of Maya LT, I assume it will be part of the version selection, but it's not there either.

* The full names of the files that comes with the exe converter download: (They came inside the 2013.3 folder, I copied the files and pull them out just to see if it works, but still doesn't)

Autodesk Media & Entertainment.daeexportpreset
Autodesk Media & Entertainment.dxfexportpreset

Autodesk Media & Entertainment.fbxexportpreset

It would be nice if you can try and see if it works on yours! Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help! 🙂

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks for providing that link 🙂 This is actually a separate tool that exists outside of Maya. Here's what it looks like:

FBXConverter.jpg

If you run the .exe file as it appears after the download, it will walk you through an install and create a shortcut on your desktop (you can see it to the left in the picture).

The intended workflow is that you would create your file in Maya, close Maya, then import your file into this converter separately 🙂

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with! I would be happy to continue assisting you.

@jordan.giboney

Oh okay! Oops, I didn't see it on my desktop! Thanks for pointing that out! Thank you so much! 😄

And just curious, is there possibly a plug-in or added feature for this inside the program for Maya LT? I know Maya has it, but just wondering if there's a way to have it built-in in Maya LT as well. 😛

Otherwise this is good enough for me now! 😉 Thank you so much for the help! I truly appreciate it!

Hi @Anonymous

Glad to hear that this is an acceptable workaround! 🙂

As for bringing this feature into Maya LT, there's no plan to do so internally because Maya LT has been designed for the Indie and hobby user for the most part (not full production game development), so any alteration with plugins/scripts/etc. would have to come from 3rd party resources which Autodesk may or may not officially support.

The limited features also explains the price difference 🙂 We wish not replace the revenue from the full version of Maya, or create a direct competitor with our own product, but we want to have options for Maya users in all financial scenarios so that we can all have a piece of the awesome creative power!!

In any case, I am glad to hear that this will work for you! If a new issue arises at any point, please do not hesitate to post it. I would be happy to help you out again.

Have a great day!

Make sure you export the fbx file as 2013 version! I get that error when I forgot to change the settings. Hope this helps 😉

I don't see any options to choose which FBX file type. It just says FBX when I go to export it from Maya. This is really awkward and difficult. I think I'll switch to using Blender instead.

Thanks anyway,

K

Yeah...I feel you, I've went through numerous troubles with this outdated DAE converter (and Autodesk doesn't seem to want to fix this even when Apple ARKit just got out and dae files are needed more than ever)...

Just as a future reference or if anyone else bumped into the same problem, here's a screenshot of the export window in Maya LT.

On the right side, you have to open up FBX File Format tab, then select FBX2013

And sometimes the dae files get corrupted...OTL Just make sure to use the Clean Up tool every time before you export.

I've the same issue as you. I'm currently using Maya 2019 and whenever I export "DAE_FBX export" it gets corrupted on Apple ARKit. I've hard time to realize that I've no luck running the *.dae files on ARKit that I export from my Maya. Without much options left I've to use Blender to export as "Collada (Default) (.dae)" and everything seems perfect. But using one extra tool, learning its UI only for an export is not a good idea. Its time consuming.
After seeing this post I'm a little bit relaxed but still using FBX Converter to get Collada DAE is not accurately what I want.
After converting FBX 2013 from Maya and convert it to collada DAE it still gets corrupted and if I export OBJ from Maya and convert it to FBX and then to Collada DAE, then the file will open on ARKit but textures won't appears on the object.
Please I need some assistance here immediately.

Thanks for providing both a link (which doesn't work any longer) as well as the product's name (which does). I know this is an old thread; but the stand-alone converter is even older (more than a decade old, at the time I'm writing). Nevertheless, it seems to work reasonably well on a Mac, even in 2023!
