Creating custom collisions?

I am in the process of placing booleans to cut holes in my meshes for doorways, windows etc as part of a modular level design pack I am building for my toolkit which will be used in a game.

After I place the boolean, and export to unreal, I obviously have the issue that I will still collide with the empty space where the doorway is...

I would like to instead, modify the collision in Maya LT so that it treats that as non collision space, and then push it out to unreal and enjoy my doorway in all its glory.

Some pointers on this topic would be awesome.

Hi there,

So you will likely have to create a new collision object(s) which are separate from your renderable geometry that you use for collision in Unreal.

In Unreal you may also be able to take your original geometry and set the collision to use the mesh instead of a bounding box which is what it might be doing.  If your mesh is higher res you would definitely want to make a separate collision geometry.

If you have to create collision geometry to keep the window open I would suggest making a number of individual boxes that cover the wall pieces around the window, e.g. one piece for the area left of the window, one piece for the area to the right, one for the area above, and one for the area below.  Then in Unreal you may be able to choose to use this mesh as the collision.

I haven't tried these, but they are some ideas which might work.

Cheers,

Remi

If you are referring to the option in unreal where you can use complex collision as simple to make the mesh itself the collision. I have tried this countless times on my object and it does not work. I really just want a straight forward answer because where ever I go to try to figure out how to make a collision for my object in Maya, I am always directed to unreal collision customization which does NOT work for my object. Or tutorials of making them in 3DS max. PLZ someone just tell me, can you, or can you not, make a custom collision in Maya?!
