Cloth

How wold you go and make some realistic cloth (bed sheets / covers / table tops and etc) without having nCloth?

I have a scene in my project that needs to have about 14 different realistic looking props like this and trying to approach it by polygonal modeling literally wants me to quit lol.

 

Any ideas? Tutorials?

Does baby maya offer anything that can help indies in this matter?

I think this is where leveraging a Sculpting package like Mudbox will be very helpful.  You will need to create maps from high poly sculpts from a sculpting package.  I do think Maya LT has a limit on the polygon amount per object, yet you can make each object separate or in parts.  You can have as many objects within your scene as you would like, you can only export a given number as well, so you would export one at a time if these are going into a game engine etc..  You can also use Substance Painter or Quixel Suite to paint and bake maps then use those for your Lower poly Maya LT polygon objects (Normal Maps in most cases)

I tried PhysX but their manual doesn't explain how to do the the basic (not attached to character) cloth stuff and no single tutorial online I can find.

I love LT but this thing has some serious limitations for game dev workflow which is starting to be really frustrating.

You can use the sculpt tools and try to sculpt the folds, yet it is a task and takes a bit more time.  Have you checked out Marvelous Designer?  They also have a subscription model, and you can use it to quickly shape your cloth, then continue in Maya LT?  This is the limitation with little Maya LT, as the Price point for the Main Version is more than 4x more, I think it is a great solution yet Maya LT is capped for that very reason (its way cheaper).  Hopefully you can figure out a workflow that works best for your.  I know Mudbox is only 10 bucks a month now, so it is quite a steal for a full sculpting and painting program.  Good Luck

We can reuse our old clothes and make some new things from them, which are very useful for us, for this you can join us. Textile waste management
