Use the crease editor concept for non destructive modeling

Use the crease set editor concept for non destructive modifiers. Select edges, faces and verts and add them to a set to which a modifier is applied. If it works for crease without breaking when you add more detail then it can certainly be used for other modifiers like extrude or bevel as well right?

Hello @Anonymous ,

Isn't it the nex component tags goal ?
Just wondered about it.

@chokmah component tagging sounds a bit like sets to me. We probably mean the same thing then. Where did you hear this is coming to Maya for non destructive modeling?

Hello again @Anonymous ,

Components tags are different to sets due to the fact they return components list. So you can feed any modeling node with this info. You can change their content later etc ...
Moreover, as you can create them procedurally too (ex : from intersecting objects), it is another way to procedural modeling.

To they are an equivalent to Houdini's Group Nodes. And I think (hope) there will be more options to this in the future.
Here is an humble example :

@chokmah looks pretty cool but the usability for modeling anything with this is awkward to say the least, no drag and drop to quickly change hierarchy or shift RMB quick functionality just the node editor. At least the framework seems to be put into place to develop some sort of tool with decent UX using component tags in the future. I just hope AD come up with something soon as it feels like ages since the modeling toolkit came out and since then basically nothing fundamental anymore. Softimage XSI had a solid non destructive workflow ages ago separate for objects and components and it was basically drag and drop > done

Yeah I was a Softimage XSI user too. I understand what you mean 😉

very interesting topic!

For Crease Set Editor and workflow alone:

-update the UI and icons

-add something similar to 3ds max Auto Creasing workflow (they use the Data Channel Modifer there)
