In my company, we are used to work with Maya on a Linux pipeline. Sometimes we receive 3dsMax projects from other studios. Here the list of solutions we have for now to deal with this situation:
- in case of .max files, open them in 3dsMax (so on a Windows station) and then export to fbx.
- in case of .3ds files, use 3dsimport plugin (from Bonus Tool) directly inside Maya.
An other solution for us could be to use fbx-converter, but it does not seem to be available on Linux. https://www.autodesk.com/developer-network/platform-technologies/fbx-converter-archives
To summarize, this is a pity to not having a correct solution on Linux to extract data from 3dsMax projects. The solution we are looking for is to directly open both .max and .3ds in Maya 🙂
