We're playing around with the idea of having a tabs in your graph editor, instead of multiple windows. So you could pin a tab much like you do in a modern internet browser. Would something like that be ideal, or would you really prefer multiple windows instead?
Hi TJ. Sometimes it's important to see two graphs at the same time and I haven't found the current solutions in maya fitting exactly what I need. Sometimes the curves on one object don't cover the same value range as another object but you want to easily access them separately. I find normalize curves doesn't work smoothly. In Soft I would just open two or more fcurve editors with different setting in each. Tabs is nice and could be a useful extra feature but I think having the ability to open multiple outliners and graph editors natively and properly supported and implemented would be great!
Ok, those are good points. I can see the value of having both.
One of the issues with the Graph Editor the way it currently is implemented is that it reflects what you have selected. So the followup question is what's the easiest way to have a second window? Would something like this make the most sense: you frame up your view the way you like it and have a way of either a)pinning that as a tab and/or b)saying make a copy (which would open a copy of the graph editor as a whole new second window).
To be clear here: we'll be leveraging a number of inputs & feedback and designing this properly, so it will take us a bit of time before we know what's feasible. Definitely appreciate your feedback and the more details you can put here the easier time we'll have with design.
I reckon you could just call up the graph editor via shortcut/interface with your objects selected and you can just lock the selection with a single nice and friendly lock button. You can then call up a second window and lock that selection or leave it unlocked and the selection updates. No need to lock or pin individual curves...that's a nightmare with many objects selected. No need for tearing off copies. You really should be able to open up with the most intuitive and simple way and that is just using the shortcut to call/menu item to call as many windows as you like. This should go for the Outliner and node editor and any other similar windows too. Just have the window update selection when its unlocked or keep it when its locked and you can have as many windows as you like that way. Simple!
excuse me. five years from here. Any news about it? any alpha or beta version available? or do users still have to keep "hacking" the UI with mel?
tearOffPanel "Graph Editor 2" "graphEditor" true; creates a new panel, but one can't dock the it, and shortcuts will only work for the original graph editor...a bit hard to use?
