XGen not working!

Hi,

I have a problem where, when I attempt to create a new collection and description on any piece of geometry then Xgen throws back the following error multiple times;

# Error: XGen: Failed to create directory: /Users/SuperJaye/Desktop/XGen Test/xgen/collections/collection/description/
( system = "No such file or directory") #

Then maya crashes and the XGen folder its supposed to create within my project ends up as an empty folder outside of the project folder. It was working fine a week ago, so I'm not sure whats changed but I have tried resetting XGen preferences and re-installing maya itself but nothing seems to be working.

Using Mac OSX version 10.9.5. and working in Maya 2016.

If anyone knows a solution to this problem please share, much appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi guys,

@Anonymous I also tried sp5 but no luck.

@Anonymous I thought I managed to find a way around it but it doesn't work properly either. Basically, Xgen only seems to work for me if the project folder is saved under my documents. Also, it only works properly on geometry created in the scene, if I try using geometry that's imported maya usually just crashes or sometimes when I just select a few polygons from the model and use xgen then it seems to work fine and creates all of the xgen files in the right project folder but nothing shows at render time and these weird x's appear on the selected faces. (See image below).

This only seems to be a problem with my mac though, so I am currently using a windows laptop for now but, it would be good to have this resolved at some stage. Hopefully someone finds the answer soon!

Thank you for responding. I am also trying to use XGen on my Mac Pro so I am assuming that the problem is only occuring on Mac OS and not on Windows. I also noticed that all of my files get saved under my documents instead of in the designated project folder. I seem to not crash Maya when I create XGen splines, but groomable splines does crash it. Although, whilst splines does not cause a crash, they do not work correctly and the splines vanish from the scene. I assume this is due to the path problem. So I am pretty sure that it is a bug that can not be fixed or worked around on our end.

I am considering purchasing VrayScatter for Maya at some point to help with distribution. I was really hoping that XGen would be a solution to work directly in Maya but I have been unable to test it to try out its true capabilities.

I'm not sure if you all found your solutions for this but I will post mine just in case some one else stumbles on to this thread. What I found was that on OSX if you have a space any where in the project path, xgen will give you this error. So the solution I found was just dropping the space or using an underscore in my project path.

I am getting an XGen error that reads failed to create directory. This error happens when I launch Maya 2018. A command window pops up, the the software automatically shuts down. Please help

Hi!

Using non-ASCII characters or whitespace in any folder name / file path, also as user/account name is not a good idea for Maya and some other applications. Please check file-paths.

Hey guys so I think I figured out the problem.

I don't know if this is a Mac thing or not. But I believe something about the Mac computers seem to have a problem routing Xgen's file path's. When you set up a project for the first time.

The problem lies when you you create the Project Folder for the first time. The trick is to make sure you save the folder to your DESKTOP. Not another location, like saving the Project into a folder. It's okay you can change the location of the folder later on and it will work perfectly fine when you reload the project.

I just tend to keep the Project Folder on the Desktop until I'm finished with all the Xgen work to avoid any disturbance. Once i'm done I'll place it where ever I like.

Hope this helps, Cheers!
