Hello,

 

I've been experimenting with xgen for a project. The main idea is to use grayscale textures, painted in Substance Painter, as masks that control generation and distribution of primitives.

 

Generally it works great, but I've noticed that when the grayscale image gets converted to ptex, it doesn't use nearly the whole gradient present in the texture. Here's a quick example:

As you can see, the large smooth gradient on the left results in a pinched, too-sharp transition on the right.

 

Any tips on how to fix this?

It could be that the texel density is not high enough so the ptex map may not have enough info to reperesent the values in the map.

 

Looking at your example image though I can see more transition in the density values than indicated. It's just not as easy to see as the hairs are not a contiguous surface
