I successfully loaded a couple of Comet scripts to my shelf, but after relaunching Maya an error appears when I select the button on my shelf:

cometJointOrient;

// Error: line 1: Cannot find procedure "cometJointOrient:. //

The same happens for cometRename.

I dug into the file structure and discovered multiple folders named "scripts" ::

  1. *myName\Documents\maya\scripts
  2. *myName\Documents\maya2018\scripts
  3. *myName\Documents\maya\2018\scripts
  4. *myName\Documents\maya\2018\prefs\scripts
  5. *myName\Documents\maya\projects\default\scripts
  6. *programFiles\Autodesk\Maya2018\scripts

I've noticed there are several other folders with the same doppelganger issue. Why are there so many dupes and which is the right one to use? Is it safe to get rid of any dupe structures if only one is needed?

Thanks in advance.

Maya searches a set of folders for scripts on startup.  The list of scripts is cached so if you add a script while Maya is running it will not detect it.  You can find the full search path by executing the following Mel command:

getenv "MAYA_SCRIPT_PATH"

User scripts should go in the user scripts folder which Maya always searches for new scripts.  It can be found by executing:

internalVar -usd

Thanks so much for this, but what about these other file structures? Is it safe to delete them?

Hi @Cybergolem

@djonesuk is correct and to add to it, I personally always load my scripts into the documents folder under whatever version of Maya I am using.

For Example: Documents->maya->2017->scripts

As for the other scripts folders, I wouldn't recommend deleting them. While its possible deleting some may not cause an issue, there's always a risk of inadvertently breaking your settings/preferences by deleting, changing or moving folders.

I hope this answers your question but feel free to let me know if you need any more information!
