VRay Displacement Maps not working properly

Hello everyone,

I am having problems with rendering in VRay. My displacement maps are not working. I began my project by using Mental Ray, in which everything worked well, and then switched to VRay under recommendation and I can't get my displacement maps to work. I can see that it's having an effect on my model (the face puffs up as I up the Alpha Gain in the displacement map) but it doesn't smooth out my edges. The images below may make it more clear.

One of my friends couldn't see the problem, but I can clearly see that the curves in my Mental Ray alpha are not visible in the VRay alpha.

I've turned on the Displacement in the RT engine, the Displacement Map in the MeshShape is also on, Displacement Control is also on. Nothing works. I feel that my Normals don't work either, my model looks completely flat! 😞

Does anyone know the solution to this? I am tempted to just use Mental Ray and get on with it. Thanks!

16 bit. Would the 32 bit fix the problem?

Not sure of the version to be honest, I am working on uni computers.

I tried the 32 bit and no difference. It almost looks like it doesn't have any difference at all

this is for 16bit maps..!

first assing a vray displacement modifier to the object...

Create --> Vray --> Vray Displacement --> Apply single Dispmap node

connect the 16bit dispmap...

open it up in the node editor and reconnect only the red channel   (not needed if you have vray 3.4)

assign a Vray subD attribute to the object...

assign a Vray disp quality atrribute to the object...

assign a Vray disp control atrribute to the object...

untick subd UVs

set max subD to 8

dispammoutn it the doubled search distace

dispshift is the negative search distance...

i hope this helps....

It's working! I am having issues with finding the perfect disp amount and shift though, I'm getting some weird errors where the mesh turns inside out. Or he looks bloated. But This is already so much better. Thank you so much!
