Viewport based, 2-Axis snapping

Hi, 

it there a way to prevent maya from snapping in the Z direction when looking through the front Z camera? 
In other words, when i look though an orthographic camera, i want to snap verts to other verts. 
When looking through the front viewport for example, i have Y as vertical and X as horizontal axis. 
If i need to snap vertices both in X and Y, i have to use both manipulater handles one by one. 
If i use the manipulators center, to snap my selection to the target directly, it will snap the vertices in X,Y and Z axis.

This becomes inconvenient really fast. 

Is there a setting or shortcut, maybe a 3rd party script, to change that behaviour i am missing out on?
