UV question

I'm confused when it comes to move and sew uv's in maya. I've attached a screen shot. My question is how do I know what edges to sew back together. I get the point of some sharing the same edges but some when I move and sew get messed up. On all models how do I know which to move and sew? When it comes to a basic cube after a projection do I sew all the edges back? automatic projectionautomatic projection

This is tricky and takes practice and getting used to. Try some tutorials is my simplest advice.

A good example of using stitch together (the new move and sew). Use a cube, automap it. Select a single side and see what edges light up in the uv editor. Pick a face, and one by one sew each side of the face (4 edges). You will get a cross in the uv editor with one leftover tile. Again, select edges in the 3d viewport and see what lights up. Pick and edge and sew the last tile, see where it ends up.

Typically you want to hide the seams on your object. Or place them in areas that you can easily paint over and hide them.

You will run into serious issues if you try to stitch a face that is already stitched. In your cube scene, now that all edges are stitched. select one and sew together, the whole thing will look messed up. Learning what you can and can't sew takes some getting used to. keep up the hard work and practice when you can. you will get used to it.

I hope this has helped! if not, just watch tutorials, there should be butt loads that are more than good enough on youtube.

Good luck
