Student WaterMark

I did not realized that I had a pereptual license of Maya 2016. some files I have been working on have been Watermarked.

If I install my perpetual licenses to the student version I have, will I need to remake the files or when I reopen them in Maya 2016 (With perpetual license attached) will the watermark fade; or do I need to re-start from scratch?

In the case is it a problem if I use my old files as refence even with the watermark?

Its not about what license you are using now, its what was used to create (or modify) the content.  You cannot re-use *any* content created using the EDU license, regardless of your current license.

Newer versions strip out the watermark, but possibly (likely?) still include a flag to indicate EDU content.  Best to do the right thing, and rebuild anything you suspect of being flagged.

I may have discovered a workaround for this situation, though Autodesk my not approve:

1 - open the student file in Maya student version

2 - export selection to your desktop as an OBJ file

3 - open Maya pro

4 - import OBJ file into Maya pro

5 - save the file as MA or MB file

The newly create file saved in Maya pro should no longer be a student file

Hi @Anonymous

@dgorsman is right that student versions of files get flagged and that is why you'll see the "Made with student version" prompt whenever the scene is opened.

However @Jozf67 actually has the right idea. If you are worried about it still being flagged as a student version you can export the models then reimport them into a non student version of Maya and you should be all set!

The only problem with this is that Autodesk may remove the ability to export objects from the Student version if it becomes widely known.

I discovered this work around when I was learning ZBrush during an in class assignment. I wanted to use a model I had previously built in Maya to add a very organic part or 2 and some other bits and pieces Maya is not good at. Maya is great for the industrial look but horribly ineffective when it comes to organic sculpting so I don't see why they would ever remove that plug-in. OBJ EXPORT is a must have for the classroom pipeline instructor. If Autodesk removed the ability to export models as an OBJ I can see people rushing to figure out how to use Blender, which is free.
