Smoothing problem weird checkered boxes?

Hello guys! First time posting on here. I'm still new to Maya, but after a few projects I'm working on the head portion for a first character model. When I hit smooth mode I'm getting a weird checkered box on one of my faces. What exactly does this mean, and how can I correct it? It's strange to me how the selected problem face is also selecting an extra edge. Heres a few photos of the issue before and after smooth mode:
Also, I tried deleting the face and bridging but the problem just jumps around. If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it a ton!
Thanks

Hi!

First, change view to Vertex and check for some wrong vertices around your problem area.

Second, correct edge-errors, by deleting and re-creating one of the adjacent faces (there seem to be some visible in your screenshots at eyes and mouth, wrongly displayed as Borders)

Thanks a lot for the reply.  I will try this but so far no luck.  Perhaps my answer is still in the link you posted though.  As for the eyes and mouth, they are creased using the crease tool so thats why the edges appear bold like that.  I don't know if this is somehow causing the weird wired boxes on the one face.

Hi

If you used the crease tool than it's not a problem. You need to enable Display Borders first to find an edge that causes the error (setting Border Width to a high value makes it a lot easier)

If you upload the scene-file i will check it.
