Simplest way to create plane with non-squared image source?

In MAX, you have a UVW map modifier to a plane, there is a "Bitmap Fit" where you can select the image file and UVs will ajust to the source ratio. So you can than scale the plane to adjust it to the bitmap.

In Blender, you just create "Images as Planes", select the image, and blender presents the user with a plane scaled based on the image ratios and all uvs setup.

In Maya you are forced to have always squared source images to be safe. So if you have 40 images to deal with, that would be a lot of work on Photoshop and 40 extra files. Is that so in 2023? Is there any way to work around like "uvautoratio" plugin working up to 2015?
