Selecting vertices selects object

Hi! From time to time I'm having a problem where selecting vertices of an object selects other objects behind it; but in object mode.

I'll attach a video that should clearly show my problem.

First though, these are my selection preferences:

 selectionPrefs.png

and I'm also pretty sure it has to do with these settings, that I never really understood, although I am no beginner user of Maya... If anyone could explain those in detail, and/or link me to a post of some kind that explains them, I'd be much obliged. I like understanding software down to it's core, so that'd be cool! Because if you tell me a fix, and it involves those buttons, and I don't understand it, then I won't be able to solve similar problems should they come up on the future, and I don't like that, and would have to waste your time again asking here. JK, I appreciate you taking the time to read this!

So as you see, I have the lattice selected, go into vert mode, try to drag-select some and it selects the object behind it. Is that intended behavior? If so, why, and how could I change it to make it more intuitive and handy, in this particular situation with a lattice around an object?

Hi!

If Ignore Selection Priority is off and Lattice Point has a higher Priority value than Polymesh it should work.

Here it works.

It seems you have a higher value for Polymesh, try Preset "Animation" or lower Polymesh Priority and raise value for Lattice Point .

If this doesn't help, try a reset of your preferences.
Rename the folder prefs in folder 2017 to something like prefs_backup, or to reset everything, the folder 2017 to 2017_backup. Maya creates new folders. Detailed at:

The Animation-preset did it for me. But otherwise, for the next time, I'll know that I can edit those priorities there.

Interestingly, for some reason, I had set the preset to some custom preset; can't remember ever playing with those priorities, but now I know.

Thanks for your fast help! 🙂
