Rotate tool stuck on one axis

So it doesn't happen every time I open Maya, but usually it does. When I go to rotate something I can only rotate in the X axis even when I grab the Y and Z axis handles to rotate with. It will act like I grabbed the X handle. The only way I've been able to get around it is to lock and Rotate-X and click on Rotate-Y or Z manually and rotate that way. I can't figure out why this is happening or how to fix it. I've tried resetting the tool, restarting Maya, restarting my computer, reinstalling maya, but with no success. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This could be because of what axis orientation your using? ie: gimbal, world, local etc.. To change this go to the move tool and open up the tool settings and change its axis orientation.

otherwise the only other possible explation would be the axis are being drived/ controled by something else?

Are you using your own scene too? Check to see if a cube in a new scene has the same issues, if not then its something inside of the scene thats causing the axis to lock.

Hey D_man,

I just wanted to reply to tell you that this happens to me too. I have over 15 years experience in Maya, and weird bugs like this keep happening constantly.

I believe it may be caused by some marking menu shortcut. Sometimes when you begin working fast, it is easy to accidentally activate a marking menu option. The problem you described can also happen in translation. At the moment, if I use the MMB to translate, only the X axis is working and the other two do nothing.

Unfortunately, I never know how to fix it. I just experiment around until it works again. In one case, I had accidentally set translation to "Normal Average" instead of "Local".

Try holding down E for the rotate tool, and left-clicking on the window. This will bring up a marking menu that relates to rotation options. Try and see if you are set to any strange mode.

I've tried making a new scene. I have even reinstalled Maya. When Maya decides to give me this issue I'm kind of just stuck with it until it decides to work again. I've checked my rotation tool settings and have even reset it many times. I still get only X axis control despite clicking on other control handles.

Oh cool thanks I'm glad it isn't just me that this is happening to. If I hadn't just gotten off of Maya for the night I would have checked out your solution. I'll be sure to try it out next time I get on.

Figured out the problem finally! It was a graphics problem. I needed to update my graphics card with like 3 updates then the rotate tool finally worked correctly.

If others encounter this issue, try switching to default renderer instead of Viewport  2.0 - might help diagnose this problem then 🙂
Thanks for adding the solution!

I tried that and it doesn't work. My graphics card is also running its latest version. What do I do?!
