"Procedural" Extendable Chain using Bezier Curve in Maya?

When it comes to this type of thing "I don't know what I don't know", which is always frustrating. Essentially I need to make a weapon that acts similar to Kratos's Blades of Chaos (the chain swords he swings around). And

-First I tried modeling the weapon and chain as a whole, added a rig to the chain and realized I had no idea how to make them extend and retract.

-Next I searched online for anything that could help, and found the ALMOST perfect tutorial here >>>

The video goes over exactly what I need, but does it in Blender. So, I downloaded Blender and controlling it was extremely unintuitive from any other industry engines I've used. I frustratingly made a chain that is rigged to a Bezier Curve and creates chain links the longer it gets, creating the illusion of extending and retracting the chains.

-Before I went any further I tested to see if I could import this into Maya to animate, and it doesn't function at all. So another huge amount of time gone.

Does anybody have an idea of how to approach this? The animations I create will be imported in Unity. I feel like I was doing so good working on my project, but this has been the biggest roadblock for the past couple days. Can I do essentially the same thing in Maya using a Bezier Curve? Is there another way to make a chain extend and act like a curve? I'm not attached to this method if there's another way to do this.
