What is the best way to import a colored point cloud into Maya 2017? (for guidance to re-model a scene)

Hi @aliasense,

Thank you for posting to the Area forums.

Unfortunately, currently Maya doesn't come with a tool to do this. Most users either create their own custom script or plugin or use 3rd party software or plugins.

One possible way is to use Autodesk Recap then export as an OBJ or FBX file.

I found the following script which may also help:

Cheers,

Hi,

Is point cloud something you would consider adding? Especially to have more speed than trying to hack some particle MEL.

It would be great to load E57, FLS and RCS point clouds also including the spherical camera positions with the image back plane setup and a projection shader auto-generated that refers all the cameras.

Let me know if this is something you would like input on. It could greatly improve workflow. And allow to use the Maya modeling tool to fix the point cloud models. Most Meshes from Recap are not really usable out of the box and its easier to model the geometry based on the point cloud (Maya would be great for that but does not support point clouds so we need to involve lots of other 3rd party software). It makes it all a big hassle.

Once the mesh is done, we also want to re-project the spherical panoramas as well as additional photos from DLSR (where we don't know the exact camera perspective) back onto the mesh in Maya. We would like to also use 3D Paint to mask / alpha blend different textures on the same mesh. That's something that cannot be done in Recap.

Currently all that business goes to another company since Maya cannot import the data from Recap (point clouds and spherical panorama images I mean).

It seems like 3DS Max loads RCS files from Recap, but I am not sure it loads the cameras/image planes. Not sure why Maya does not support it.

I would like to keep this request active. All of the point mentioned are extremely useful.

It is shame that Autodesk isn't listening.

So its a +1 from me and no doubt others.

Check out SCAN2FX - good data conversion tool (point cloud to mesh)...

After I also needed something comparable for learning issues, I wrote a script for it. So it is possible to take the coordinates (X,Y,Z) from the Point Cloud file and import them as particles into Maya. The next logical step would be to convert the information into a mesh. Maybe you are interested in this solution or Autodesk is interested. Would be pleased about feedback.
