Painting xGen Maps

90% of the time that I try to paint maps for xGen in Maya (using the 3D Paint Tool), I am unable to paint any strokes in the viewport. The brush is simply unresponsive. Once or twice I've gotten it to work, but cannot duplicate that success no matter what I try. Has anybody else had issues like this, or can anyone help to troubleshoot?

thanks!

A few things to try:

• Add UVs to the mesh (auto should be OK)

• Change the material on the mesh to a simple lambert

  ○ I triend painting on a mesh that had the Arnold skin shader on it, it would not work

• Work in a Maya project folder

  ○ Make sure all the proper folders are there

  ○ Save the maya file in the project before creating the Xgen description

• Save-Quit-Restart Maya

I'm having a very simliar problem. I did all of the suggested trial and error, and still the paint brush just refuses to work. In the File Textures section, I noticed the texture file is linked to the "color" attribute, and not the xgen mask. Is there some way to manually pipe in the file? Or is there some way to convert an image file to .ptx?

It's worked before, so I am baffled as to what has happened to make it break. Pretty sure this is a bug.

THe 3D painting method for xGen maps will NOT work with a 3rd party shader. You must have a native Maya shader on the object you are trying to paint. I'm a Renderman user and found this out the hard & long way. Next, you should click the pin icon next to the map parameter you are trying to paint in the XGen window. After that, it should work normally as expected.
