Opening A Scene in an older or newer version

Hey guys!
If I download a model, which was made in Maya 2011, can I open it in Maya 2016? Or just vice versa?

Hi @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

If it's a maya scene file, you would need it to be in .ma (ascii) format in order to open it.

However if it is an obj or fbx model, you can import it into any version of Maya!

Please let me know if this helps or if you need any more assistance!
