object doesn't bake properly

I am following along the Maya Studios: Game Environments and Props book and I am encountering a weird issue when trying to follow along with one of the lessons (making a brick wall) I am trying to bake a diffuse map. I am given the directions for targeting the low poly wall(plane) to the high poly bricks, (tons of cubes) with the parameters in rendering to be 1024 by 1024, keep aspect ratio, medium quality (4x4), envelope is selected and about a 3 for the slider. however, I keep getting the "side view" baked, compared to getting a "front view". I thought the simple fix would be "oh just rotate it 90 degrees and try again, and that didn't work either. I am not sure what else to do at this point.
