Multiple tools doing nothing

I've had this before with Maya 2012 and now again with 2013, albeit with different tools. Currently whenever I click either the 'combine' options box or the 'planar mapping' options box (or any UV mapping options box) nothing happens, no error message, nothing on screen. The program window around Maya greys out as if I have clicked on to a different running program on my PC. Any ideas as to why this happens/ed?

Would like to avoid an re-installation of Maya as this would mean it's a common occurance and I will be constantly losing my preferences and plug-ins.

Thanks for any help

Hello,

On a fresh install of the software, when you first launch it, it asks if you would like to create default preferences or use the ones from a previous version. If you select the latter, and use old preferences, they can cause issues like the ones you are seeing.

I would recommend resetting the preferences via the following steps:

MAC

1) Go to "Go > Go to folder..."
2) type /Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/Autodesk/maya/2014-x64/
3) Click "Go"
4) Find the prefs folder and rename it to "prefsOld"
5) Restart Maya 2014 and if prompted to select the option to create default preferences.

Windows

1) Rename the "prefs" folder found in the following location to something like "prefsOld":

C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\maya\2014-x64\

2) Restart Maya.
3) If prompted to, choose the option to Create Default Preferences.

If you have custom shelfs and scripts you can then manually move them from the old version to the new one.

Hope that information is helpful.

Cheers,

Went to reply with thanks last night but the website was down for maintenance! 😛 It fixed issue although I have lost my CryEngine Export shelf now. Any ideas how to reclaim it?

Hello,

To fix the Cry Engine shelf you should be able to copy any of the Cry Engine stuff from the oldPrefs folder to the corresponding location in the new "Prefs" folder. So take a look into the oldPrefs folder and subfolders for any Cry Engine stuff and then move it over to the new prefs.

If that doesn't do it's possible that you may need a new shelf script that will work with 2014 (I wouldn't expect this to be the case, but it is possible).

Thanks, that did it! Sorry for such a late reply, I've come across another aggrevating issue, or possibly something already known. I scaled a model up, using the scale tool, and it created graphical glitches in the model, when rotating in High Quality Render or Viewport 2.0, almost as if I've duplicated it the polys are directly on top of each other. I then found this to happen even in new shaped I created in the scene. I tried exporting them as obj's and then into a new scene but the the same problem arises.

It doesn't seem to be an issue with the model as I loaded the obj into ZBrush and everything was as it should be. I've set the Nvidia control panel to use my dedicated GPU but for some reason in GPU Cache settings it keeps showing the onboard Intel HD card as the chosen hardware. Could this be the issue? I've also reinstalled Maya but that has had no affect. The effect seems to lessen as I zoom in closer.

Thank you for your help so far, sorry if this should be a new topic, I'll create one if need be.

Hello wraithen,

I do think this should be logged as a new post that way it is easier to find if someone is having the same type issue.

From reading your description and from looking at the screen capture it looks to me like the issue could be related to your graphics card (especially since it doesn't occur in viewport 1.0 a.k.a. hardware). I would recommend updating the driver to see if that helps. Also you can check at the following link to see if you card is qualified:
