Minor Maya 2017 problems

Hey guys I've recently got into maya for school and I've been having minor experiences with it

and every time I select or create a model, the vertex or edge I've selected, a red highlight will

appear around it and it's limiting what I can make because when I drag it or move it the others

follow... extruding and such still works but is limited because when I move it another part close to

it moves without me selecting it...

Check if "Soft Select" is enabled (hotkey B):
