Maya2020 MacOS Catalina 10.15.2 application crashes

I cannot even open Maya2020 MacOS Catalina 10.15.2 / the application crashes, same with Maya 2019--this is a clean install. Also tried loading application through terminal, same results.

Error message says:

"Fatal error. Attempting to save in  /var/folders/n9/ynnxhj2128z6rs_bs1_4td480000gn/T/username.20200207.1242.ma"

I am attaching 2 apple logs, one from the terminal.

I am an educator and really need to use this--Any ideas? help, suggestions MUCH appreciated

I haven't seen this startup crash before.

have you setup your Security and Privacy settings for Accessibility,  Full Disk Access and Files and Folders to allow Maya access to them ?    in the System Preferences

From the trace, looks like there is a conflict between Maya’s embedded python and a local copy in your directory

do you have any environment variables set when running maya or in a Maya.env file ?

MAYA_*

PYTHONHOME

PYTHONPATH

From a terminal window can see environment variables with the command:

env

The list of EVs does not explain why your local copy of PySide2 is being referenced

/Users/geraldineerman/Library/Python/2.7/lib/python/site-packages/PySide2/Qt/lib/QtCore.framework/Versions/5/QtCore

Maya has its own embedded versions of both Qt and PySide2

the stack trace starts from some PySide2 usage, but is not from the version within the Maya framework

do you have additional plugins being loaded?

what version of PySide2 do you have locally

Thank you again! I am unclear about/how Python works.
Perhaps te conflict is related to using XCode + usdz convertor tools, as i
think i remember installing some Python tools?
But I am unclear what to do now?
thanks again..

As a test you could rename the directory:

   /Users/geraldineerman/Library/Python/2.7/lib/python/site-packages/PySide2
to hide it.   this would break whatever is expecting to see/use PySide2, but should remove it from Maya's view.   By renaming, its possible to return the name as it was before

in a Terminal window:

cd /Users/geraldineerman/Library/Python/2.7/lib/python/site-packages
mv PySide2 PySide2-hide

to rename back to the origin

cd /Users/geraldineerman/Library/Python/2.7/lib/python/site-packages
mv PySide2-hide PySide2

Hi, @warnold1 thanks, I got the PySide2 problem too. That causes maya2020 on Catalina crashed when opening it. But after I `pip uninstall PySide2`, or rename the folder to PySide2-hide, maya2020 still tells me that it needs shiboken-based type when opening it. But I need PySide2 on some other stuff, how can I fix it, please?

This window just jumped up and disappeared, the maya2020 auto closed again and give no other error information.

Are you running Maya or MayaLT ?
if Maya LT may be a different issue

the change above was hiding the user's local PySide2 directory.
what version (path) of PySide2 did you remove/hide ?    not Maya's  correct.
If you removed Maya's copy of PySide2, then you  will most likely start to see PySide2 errors.

what was your original problem ?  the output of the message of the missing MTsetToggleMenuItem

Did you uninstall or rename PySide inside Maya? What the original errors are before you removed PySide?

Do you have PYTHONPATH or PYTHONHOME set before starting Maya?

Message 14 of 20

no, I didn't remove Maya's PySide, and I'm not using Maya LT, it still there under the path

-- /Applications/Autodesk/maya2020/Maya.app/Contents/bin/pyside2-rcc

I just followed the instructions on Github and "pip install" pyside2 on my mac in order to build pixar_usd, nothing else I did.

After built pixar_usd,  maya crashed. So I find the post here, to uninstall the pyside2 that I just installed, and the error just jumped out like that.

Suffered from this too. I had to uninstall PySide2 and shiboken

pip uninstall PySide2

pip uninstall shiboken2

Then Maya started successfully.

I know this solution maybe a little too technical, but it can help someone else that needs to keep Pyside installed.

You can prevent Maya from loading the Pyside you "pip installed" on your Mac by setting the environment variable  PYTHONUSERBASE to another folder before launching Maya at the command line.  That variable is used to find your user python folder. For example, you could type in the terminal "export PYTHONUSERBASE=~/MyPythonFolder", and then  launch Maya at the command (with something like "open /Application/Autodesk/Maya2020/Maya.app") in the terminal

The environment variable prevents python from loading the packages in ~/Library/Python

Setting the variable only just before launching Maya allows continuing to use Python normally outside of Maya and only make a special case for Maya.

The only issue is, of course, that it then not load any of the other packages you have installed. However, it would be possible to install these packages in that MyPythonFolder That's what the variable is for: redirect your use folder to somewhere else.
