Hello everyone.. i have a problem in maya.. i cannot select objects in the front. if there is object/geometry behind an object and i try to select the object in the front it automatically selects the object in the back. but if there nothing behind the object to be selected then the selection is ok... same is the problem with faces.... i cannot select faces in the front..also faces are selected with a different angle. not from the front.

this is happening only in the perspective.

i ahve tried deleting preferences but not working.

i have tried back face culling but not working

kindly help me.....

Does this issue happen if you zoom further out and try and select the model infront too?

You might have adjusted your selection settings somehow to select within a certain distance.

click Q to select your mouse tool and go onto the tool settings ( double click the mouse tool, on the left side of the UI you should see it highlight when you click Q and changes when you press w,e,r ) just try resetting the tool.

In your tool settings there is an option called "camera based selection" with that option enabled, you are only able to select components/objects you actually see.

So then I am not the only one. I have the same problem. Sometimes unselecting camera based selection solve the problem sometimes it does not. Someone suggested could be a problem related with the measure being too big. but then why it doesnt select in wireframe mode? To be able to select I have to put the viewport in an empty space rotating the camera so nothing stands in front or behind the object I want to select. Now theres is another problem when trying to pan the camera sometimes just zoom in and out but no pan. All this is happening in Maya 2016 Ext. 2 It didnt happen in Maya 2016.

I'm still having this exact problem, but I'm on LT 2016.. 😞 I don't remember it happening a few months ago.

Same problem here in Maya 2017. From Tool setting, check "Automatic camera-based selection" in common selection options.

Found out following solution:

go to your Layer Panel.Select the Layer you want to see or edit

there are 3 small checkboxes in line

set box 1= "V" for visible

set box 2= " "

set box 3= " "

hope it helps

The above didn't work for me, but this did

Windows > Settings/Preferences > Preferences > Selection > Camera-based Selection (if camera-based doesn't work, "pick chooser")
