Maya coloring object not selected

i select just two objects but and add material and then reed color. Maya then colors whole object even the parts not selected ? im following a yt tutorial and the guy does the same thing and it doesn't happen to him where am i going wrong ?Screenshot 2022-10-19 190045.pngScreenshot 2022-10-19 190320.png

My guess is that your material, "phong1", is assigned to the whole object.  When you change the color on "phong1", it doesn't matter what you have selected.  The color will update on every object that is assigned to "phong1".  Try making another new material, like "phong2".  Then select some parts of your object, and assign the new material to just those parts.
