I've already contacted our Autodesk rep, but I figured it might be worth posting here as well.
I’m working with some artists and we’ve uncovered a grumpy little bug related to colorSets and construction history in Maya 2018.6 (probably all versions).
Fortunately, we also have a workaround.
Summary:
On a poly mesh with construction history: if you rename a colorSet to the name of a previously deleted colorSet, the newly renamed colorSet disappears.
Repro steps:
- Create a poly sphere (with construction history)
- Open the Color Set Editor
- Create a new colorSet with default settings (default name is “colorSet”)
- Create a second colorSet with default settings (default name is “colorSet1”)
- Delete the first colorSet (“colorSet”)
- Rename the remaining colorSet to the name of the previously deleted colorSet name (“colorSet1” -> “colorSet”)
- Observe that the Color Set Editor is now empty and the sphere no longer has vertex colors.
This doesn’t affect mesh that doesn’t have construction history.
Workaround steps:
- Create a poly sphere (with construction history)
- Open the Color Set Editor
- Create a new colorSet with default settings (default name is “colorSet”)
- Create a second colorSet with default settings (default name is “colorSet1”)
- (This step is crucial) Rename the first colorSet to something arbitrary (example: “TempName”)
- Delete the first colorSet (“TempName”)
- Rename the remaining colorSet to the name of the previously deleted colorSet name (“colorSet1” -> “colorSet”)
- Observe that everything is fine, and enjoy the rest of your day.
