MAYA_APP_DIR on OSX Catalina pointing to NFS mount

Hi

I have a studio that defines MAYA_APP_SIR to point to a location on an NFS share.

This has previosly worked just fine.   Since upgrading to 10.15 Catalina on OSX and launching maya from a shell I get this error:

UTS014721:mayaprefs 120988$ maya

Please check for sufficient disk space and necessary write permissions.

It is odd and only on the 10.15 machine.   The share is on an isilon.

If I copy the prefs to some place local like /Users/Share/maya_prefs and set the MAYA_APP_DIR to point to that - then maya launces fine.

Does anyone know what is going on with catalina and nfs?  It would be great if maya was a bit more forthcoming with what it was trying to do and fail.   It is the crappest error message Ive seen for a long while....

Any help appreciated.

Matt
